News from the Nationals (posted 20/4/2017)
With the First National Championships just a few days away we have some urgent traffic news for people travelling on the M25 clockwise. Please be aware that the M3 entry slip road from the M25 is closed all weekend. You will need to follow the diversion to the next junction which will bring you back onto the M25 and then on to the M3. Please allow extra time, especially as we have the NPWRA top ten presentation to make before the racing begins. In other news, a reminder that we will be holding a raffle and as always, donations of raffle prizes would be gratefully received. Finally, dont forget that Jane is holding a bring and buy sale to raise funds for an animal charity and is also looking for donations of dog-related items, I know that she has some wonderful whippet prints and sculptures that have already been donated, so bring along some extra pennies (or pounds as it is all for a good cause). Safe journeys to all and we look forward to welcoming you all to Andover on Sunday.
News from the Nationals (posted 14/4/2017)
The draw has now taken place for the First National Championships of 2017 and we are excited to announce that once again we have a bumper entry of 130 dogs who will be running at Andover. With the Championships just a week away we would like to remind racers of a few key pointers to help things run smoothly on the day. Firstly a reminder that all new passports need to be signed off by the relevant race official from their home club before arriving at weigh-in. I know that our Passport Secretary Dougy has been incredibly busy since the start of January with no less than 35 new passports going out in the first 3 months of 2017, so do make sure that you have yours signed for your dog. Secondly, a reminder about the rule change that took place at the AGM regarding passports on the day of the Championships, our rules now read that "Passports for finalists at the Championships are to be taken to the P.A. straight after the semi-finals. There will be a last call for passports. If the passport is not in the basket when racing resumes for the finals that dog will be withdrawn and not allowed to race". Once again this is to help the day run smoothly and to allow officials to get on with filling out passports ahead of the finals so they can be returned at the presentation. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

In an exciting race for top spot in the Dog’s league two brothers from the Quiver x Mystify Me litter fought it out; Jim McLoughlin’s NPWRCh Leavit to Me taking the honours by 4 points from Jane Rankin’s NPWRCh Endeavour. Both dogs became new Champions in their first full season of running with Leavit to Me winning the first Nationals of the year and securing this title on the bend at the Independent in the NE28lb group, but Endeavour pipped him to the post by winning his first Nationals in October last year before taking his title at the first Nationals of 2015 also held at Andover in the NE24lb group. Neither have been beaten in a Nationals final to date. The next four places were very close with only 4 points separating them. In third place Jeff Allan’s NGr Gem Rock Nugget (Quiver x Sapphires Gem) finished the year on a high by winning the NE 26lb group and becoming a graduate at the last Nationals in September, this followed on from a 2nd and a 3rd place earlier in the year. At three years old Viv Thurman’s NGr Cheeky Devil (Devil’s Double x Kinda Cheeky) is one of three dogs in the top ten not sired by Jane Rankin’s incredible stud dog NPWRCh Quiver. In a year when he made his first two National finals he came a close second on the bend in May before winning the NE20lb group at the last Nationals held at Andover to become a Graduate and secure fourth place in the league. In fifth, NPWRCH Troublemaker (He’s The One x Diane’s Girl) owned by Christina Lomas came back from a mid-season injury to take two second places in the final two Championships in the NE26lb group. He started the season is sizzling form winning the opening Nationals and then gained his title a month later running on the bend at the Independent. The final top ten dog not to be sired by NPWRCh Quiver is Rob Hughes and Darcia Gingell’s Duncton Dark Knight (Evansent x Savernake Sporting Gun) who took sixth spot. Running in a very competitive NE 30lb group he made three finals with a runner up spot in the fourth Nationals held at the Northern being his best result. Six points behind in seventh place was another brother of the top two, also running in the NE 30lb group Steve Bryant’s Agile Approach. He made four finals with second places at both the first and last Nationals of the year. Julia and Vince Gajny’s NGr Hellfire Corner (Quiver x Honeybunch) is another 30lb-er who had a good year, making all four finals that he ran in and becoming a Graduate after winning the third Nationals held at the Northern. His litter brother NPWRCh Longbow belonging to Tony Connor secured ninth place and was another dog to become a new National Champion this year after winning the NE30lb group at Gloucester in August. Keeping it in the family, the final position went to Steve Miller’s NGr Red Apache – another brother to NPWRCh’s Leavit to Me and Endeavour and Agile Approach who became a Graduate after winning the third Nationals held at the Northern in June and also took 3rd and 2nd places in April and September at the two Nationals held at Andover.

Urgent Message - Entries for first National Championships
Many entries are still being received from racers who have not re-joined the NPWRA this year. A polite but firm reminder that entries will not be accepted unless membership for 2014 has been paid. It does state this clearly on the entry form.Membership was due by the end of January and is now two months overdue. Please ensure that you have paid your membership before sending off your entry. We as an organisation do not want to be returning entries to the owners, especially with the closing date fast approaching. Please feel free to share this with all other racers, especially those who may not have access to the internet and may need a reminder.Thank you for you co-operation.
On behalf of the NPWRA committee
First Nationals being held at Andover
A NPWRA committee meeting took place on Saturday 22nd March and it was discussed and agreed that for the safety of the dogs we would use the track with the sand finish for the first National Championships at Andover.Andover had advised us that their longer 180 yard track would not be available yet due to the fact that it had just been seeded and covered in fertiliser as it has insufficient grass cover.Andover have been running on the track with the sand finish since the 16th February and various numbers of dogs have been racing and trialling weekly. In that time no injuries have occurred due to the sand finish and everyone who has raced at the track has seemed happy with the improved facilities.
2014 National Championship dates, venues and distances
Sunday 27th April 150 yards at Andover WRC
Sunday 1st June 170 yards at the Northern WRC
Sunday 3rd August 150 yards at Gloucester PWRC
Sunday 12th October 185 yards at Andover WRC
Please note a change of date from that first published for the 4th National Championships at Andover. It was brought to our attention by a Nationals member that the date we had booked clashed with that of the HoE open. In the interest of good will and to ensure that the club's open entry is not affected we have moved the Championships to the next available date.
